Don’t get complacent in the Cloud

Cloud security is getting better but that doesn’t mean you’re not at risk.

WannaCry was one of the biggest and most widespread “attacks” ever seen, but it wasn’t so widespread as to take out the world. And that’s a concern because WannaCry has been widely described as amateur. Keeping data secure has never been harder than it is today.

Now that the Internet of Things (IoT) is a thing (in the past it was only computers online, now there’s phones, watches, cars, televisions and fridges online too), the security holes into your networks are larger.

Anyone can create a device that goes online, but who is checking to see whether they are secure or not? It wasn’t that long ago that a Jeep was hacked and there’s dozens of stories about child video monitors being hacked.

This is basically a hackers paradise and whilst many fail to deliver serious harm, there’s a general feeling that it’s only a matter of time.

There’s no single approach that can cover all the gaps and security professionals are often fighting hard for budget. Too often security is added as an afterthought which can sometimes be too little too late.

What can you do?

Start with some security basics.
1. Implement a comprehensive backup system and test restore regularly
2. Use encryption for data
3. Deploy multi-factor authentication
4. Ask your providers for compliance reports
